Getting Lost in the Labyrinth

The path through the labyrinth is a two-way street. When we meet someone going in the opposite direction, how do we greet, meet, and step around this person? We may choose to step off the path. If the labyrinth is new to us, or if it is crowded, our eyes can be confused by the lines. We may step back into the wrong place and lose our way. This can cause a fair amount of anxiety. But if we do get lost, one of two things can happen: we either return to the center or return to the entrance. And usually we have learned something about ourselves.

Iwas so absorbed in the process on the way out from the center, that I didn’t realize I had lost my way somewhere along the line and ended up back in the middle . . . This would usually have caused me trouble. Ordinarily I would have been so distracted at doing it wrong that I would have completely lost awareness of what I was supposed to be doing. Add to that embarrassment, frustration, irritation . . . well, I suppose you get the picture. This time, however, I was immediately aware of the thought that this is exactly what happens to us when we are on the path of our spiritual journey—when we get lost, God just leads us back to the center, and it doesn’t make a whit of difference which road gets us there.
